The Origin of Veterans' Day

On this day in 1918--at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month--an armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed, ending the Great War, now known as World War I. This is the headline that appeared in the New York Times on that day.

This photograph shows the U.S. 64th Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, celebrating the news of the armistice.

The observance was was originally known as Armistice Day, but in 1954, after World War II and the Korean Conflict, the holiday was renamed Veterans' Day.
